"answer": "For most European budget-airline trips, buy a **soft underseat bag measuring no more than 40 × 30 × 20 cm**. It is the safest common size for a free basic-fare bag on Ryanair, Wizz Air and Vueling; easyJet permits a larger 45 × 36 × 20 cm bag, but the smaller size is more widely compatible.[1][2]\n\n## The two different types of carry-on\n\n| Type | Typical UK/European allowance | When it is free | Recommendation |\n|---|---:|---|---|\n| **Underseat personal item** | 40 × 30 × 20 cm on Ryanair/Wizz Air/Vueling; 45 × 36 × 20 cm on easyJet | Usually included in the cheapest fare | **Best value and safest cross-airline choice** |\n| **Overhead cabin suitcase** | Usually around 55 × 40 × 20 cm | Often requires a paid cabin-bag add-on, priority boarding or a higher fare | Buy only if you expect to pay for overhead storage |\n\nRyanair’s paid overhead allowance is 55 × 40 × 20 cm; Wizz Air’s is 55 × 40 × 23 cm; and easyJet’s larger paid cabin bag is 56 × 45 × 25 cm.[1][3] A normal small wheeled suitcase is therefore **not automatically free** on these airlines.\n\n## Recommended purchase\n\n**Cabin Max Anode 40 × 30 × 20 cm underseat cabin bag** would be the practical UK choice. Choose the version with a flexible fabric construction, a padded laptop compartment and dimensions that include wheels and handles. A soft bag is preferable because it can compress slightly into the airport sizer; do not overpack it.\n\nIf you primarily fly easyJet and want more capacity, choose an underseat bag up to **45 × 36 × 20 cm",

"answer": "For **WIZZ Priority**, a good UK option is the **Aerolite Premium PP Expandable Cabin Suitcase**. Use it **unexpanded at 55 × 40 × 20 cm**; it has four wheels, a TSA lock, and leaves 3 cm of depth tolerance under Wizz Air’s maximum. [6]\n\n### Wizz Air limits\n\n- **Free under-seat bag:** maximum **40 × 30 × 20 cm**, up to **10 kg**. [4]\n- **Additional wheeled cabin bag with WIZZ Priority:** maximum **55 × 40 × 23 cm**, up to **10 kg**. [4]\n- Wizz Air excludes handles and wheels from the stated dimensions, but the wheels may protrude by no more than **5 cm**. [4]\n\n### Recommended suitcase\n\n| Item | Dimension/limit |\n|---|---:|\n| Suitcase | Aerolite Premium PP Expandable |\n| Use for Wizz Air | **55 × 40 × 20 cm unexpanded** |\n| Maximum when expanded | 55 × 40 × 23 cm |\n| Wizz Air allowance | 55 × 40 × 23 cm |\n| Weight allowance | Up to 10 kg, including contents |\n\nDo **not** expand it on Wizz Air: at **55 × 40 × 23 cm**, it reaches the airline’s full allowance, while expanding beyond that would exceed the permitted depth. Also remember that WIZZ Priority permits this suitcase **in addition to** the separate 40 × 30 × 20 cm under-seat bag. [4][6]",

"answer": "For most European budget-airline trips, the best choice is **a soft underseat bag sized 40 × 30 × 20 cm**, rather than a wheeled suitcase. It is the most restrictive common free allowance and works for Ryanair, Wizz Air and Vueling; easyJet permits a larger 45 × 36 × 20 cm bag.[1][2]\n\n## Best free option: underseat bag\n\n**Recommendation:** Cabin Max Stowaway or a similar 20–25-litre soft backpack/duffel, kept within **40 × 30 × 20 cm**.\n\n- **Ryanair:** 40 × 30 × 20 cm, free.\n- **Wizz Air:** 40 × 30 × 20 cm, free; 10 kg limit.\n- **Vueling:** 40 × 30 × 20 cm, free.\n- **easyJet:** 45 × 36 × 20 cm, free; 15 kg limit.\n- **Jet2:** 40 × 30 × 15 cm, so check the reduced depth.\n- It must fit **under the seat**, not in the overhead locker.[1][2]\n\nChoose a soft-sided model with a rectangular shape, compression straps, a laptop sleeve and an exterior pocket. Avoid filling it so tightly that it cannot be pushed into the airline’s sizing gauge.\n\n## Best paid overhead-cabin option\n\nIf you have purchased priority, an overhead-bag add-on or a fare that includes cabin baggage, choose a **lightweight 55 × 40 × 20 cm spinner**.\n\nThis is the safest cross-airline size because it fits the common paid allowance for Ryanair and Wizz Air; easyJet allows up to 56 × 45 × 25 cm, but the larger size is less universally compatible.[1][3]\n\nGood UK buying criteria:\n\n- **Maximum packed dimensions:** 55 × 40 × 20 cm",

Buy it in its **unexpanded configuration: 55 × 40 × 20 cm**; it has four wheels, a hard polypropylene shell, and can expand to 23 cm when permitted by another airline.[1]\n\n- **Wizz Air free under-seat bag:** maximum **40 × 30 × 20 cm**, up to **10 kg**.[2]\n- **Additional WIZZ Priority wheeled cabin bag:** maximum **55 × 40 × 23 cm**, up to **10 kg**, stored in the overhead locker.[2]\n- **Wizz Air measurement rule:** the stated dimensions exclude handles and wheels, but the wheels may add no more than **5 cm**.[3]\n- **Recommended suitcase dimensions:** **55 × 40 × 20 cm unexpanded**, including its main external parts; it therefore stays safely below the 23 cm depth limit and leaves allowance for wheel protrusion.[1]\n\nDo **not** expand it beyond 23 cm for Wizz Air, and check the packed weight before departure; the suitcase plus contents must remain within the **10 kg** limit.",

"answer": "For most UK travellers, the best approach is to buy **two different bags**, because European budget airlines distinguish sharply between a **free underseat personal item** and a **paid overhead cabin bag**.\n\n## Recommended sizes\n\n| Use | Recommended maximum | Airlines it suits |\n|---|---:|---|\n| **Free underseat bag** | **40 × 30 × 20 cm** | Ryanair, Wizz Air, Vueling; also generally safe for the strictest budget-airline limits[1][4] |\n| **Paid overhead cabin suitcase** | **55 × 40 × 20 cm** | Ryanair and Wizz Air; easyJet’s larger allowance is more generous at 56 × 45 × 25 cm[1][2] |\n\n### Best free option: compact underseat bag\n\nBuy a soft-sided **40 × 30 × 20 cm underseat case or backpack**, ideally with:\n\n- A stated size that includes wheels and handles\n- A flexible front or top panel, since hard-shell cases may fail to fit into the sizing gauge\n- Around 20–25 litres of capacity\n- A trolley sleeve if you will combine it with paid overhead luggage\n- A light construction, leaving more of the airline’s weight allowance for belongings\n\nA wheeled underseat case is convenient, but a backpack is usually more space-efficient and easier to compress. This is the bag to choose if you want to avoid paying for cabin baggage altogether. Ryanair and Wizz Air use 40 × 30 × 20 cm as their free allowance, while easyJet permits a larger 45 × 36 × 20 cm bag.[1][4]\n\n### Best paid option: overhead cabin suitcase\n\nFor a dedicated overhead case, choose a **55 × 40 × 20 cm cabin suitcase**. This is the most broadly compatible conservative size for Ryanair and Wizz Air, whose paid allowances are 55 × 40",

It uses the full permitted cabin-case dimensions and is widely sold in the UK; choose the non-expanded configuration when flying Ryanair. [2][10]\n\n### Ryanair allowance\n\n- **Small personal bag:** maximum **40 × 30 × 20 cm**, stored under the seat. [8]\n- **Larger cabin bag:** maximum **55 × 40 × 20 cm**, stored in the overhead locker. [8]\n- **Weight limit for the larger bag:** **10 kg**. [5][9]\n- The measurements include the suitcase’s **wheels, handles and other external components**, so avoid a case advertised as 55 × 40 × 20 cm if those parts are excluded from the stated dimensions. [9]\n\n### Recommended suitcase\n\n**Aerolite 55 × 40 × 20 cm four-wheel cabin suitcase**\n\n- **Dimensions:** **55 × 40 × 20 cm**, including wheels and handle\n- **Weight:** check the specific UK listing; lighter is preferable to preserve the 10 kg packing allowance\n- **Type:** hard-shell, four-wheel spinner\n- **Why it fits:** designed to match Ryanair Priority’s maximum overhead-bag size. [2][10]\n\nAvoid the Aerolite **expandable** version unless it is kept at **55 × 40 × 20 cm**; when expanded to 23 cm deep, it exceeds Ryanair’s limit. [1][4] Pair it with a soft personal item no larger than **40 × 30 × 20 cm**.",
