How to Add Useful Product Attributes in Shopify

Put material, capacity, dimensions, and care facts in the right Shopify fields without making them up.

Start in Cuebase, then verify the facts

Open Catalog Readiness in Cuebase and select a scanned product. Its rule breakdown shows whether category, options, and structured attribute metafields are present. Use that list to decide which product record to review first; it is a gap list, not evidence for a missing material, measurement, or care instruction.

When the product record supports an improvement, choose Generate improvements to prepare drafts for review. Cuebase can draft product-level copy, SEO fields, product type, a category suggestion, and custom attribute suggestions. It does not write anything until you choose Apply all to Shopify. Use Shopify admin for category attributes, variant-specific data, typed measurement fields, and theme display.

Start with the product record, not the field name

“Material” and “dimensions” look straightforward until the source is a supplier PDF, a sample label, or someone’s memory. Write down the source before changing Shopify. If a fact is absent, leave it absent and ask the supplier or product owner. A neat-looking attribute based on a guess is still wrong.

Use Shopify’s product details for the shared listing, then decide whether the fact belongs to a product, a variant, or the visible page copy. Shopify lets a product have one standard category for all of its variants. That category can unlock category metafields—Shopify calls them product attributes. A category attribute such as color can also connect to variant options. Shopify’s product-details reference explains both the category and the fields available on a product.

Capacity that changes by sizeVariant option or variant metafieldEach purchasable choice needs its own accurate value.
Packed shipping dimensionsYour shipping configuration or package recordsVerify which package data your current shipping setup supports; do not assume a variant dimension field feeds rates.
Care instructionsProduct metafield and visible product-page blockThe data record alone does not guarantee shoppers see it.

A Shopify metafield stores specialized information that does not fit a standard product field. Its type matters: use a measurement type for a measurement and text for a short instruction. Shopify’s metafield type reference lists the available value types. A compatible theme can connect a product or variant metafield to a product page, but Shopify does not show every metafield by default. Check the page after you save.

Worked example: a fictional insulated bottle

The following record is invented. It demonstrates how to separate facts; it is not a supplier specification or a claim about a real product.

Verified fictional source factField choiceVisible page check
Aurora Bottle is stainless steelProduct material attribute: Stainless steelShow “Stainless steel” in a specifications block.
The 500 ml option holds 500 ml; the 750 ml option holds 750 mlSize option plus a variant-level capacity fieldThe selected variant must show its own capacity.
Hand-wash onlyProduct care-instructions metafieldShow it near specifications or the care section.
The fictional 500 ml variant ships in a 24 × 9 × 9 cm carton; the fictional 750 ml variant ships in a 30 × 9 × 9 cm cartonRecord each package size separately in your shipping recordsCheck how your shipping setup handles these packages. This example does not imply Shopify provides a native variant-specific package-dimension field.

Do not turn a product feature into an attribute because it sounds useful. “Keeps drinks cold all day” needs a tested duration and conditions before it belongs anywhere. Likewise, a color option is not proof of a particular coating, and a supplier’s “eco” label is not a material composition.

Use Cuebase to find the gaps, then review each suggestion

Open Catalog Readiness in Cuebase and select a scanned product. The rule breakdown shows whether the product has structured attribute metafields and whether its category and options are present. Choose Generate improvements to create reviewable suggestions. Cuebase can draft a description, SEO fields, product type, category suggestion, and structured attribute suggestions from the product data it has. It should not be treated as evidence for a missing fact.

For this fictional bottle, reject a suggested capacity if the current product data never states 500 ml or 750 ml. Keep only facts you can trace to a product record. When you choose Apply all to Shopify, Cuebase writes the reviewed changes; it does not write anything when you only generate a draft. Its generated attributes are sent as custom.* single-line-text metafields. They are not automatically converted into Shopify category metafields, variant metafields, measurement fields, or theme blocks.

That boundary matters. Use Shopify admin to set category attributes and variant-specific data in the appropriate fields. Then use the theme editor to make approved fields visible. If Shopify rejects a metafield because an existing definition uses a different type, Cuebase reports a warning and the merchant must resolve the field in Shopify.

A five-step attribute check

  1. Collect the facts

Copy only confirmed material, capacity, dimension, included-part, and care facts into a source log.

  2. Assign the category

Choose the most accurate Shopify standard category. This determines which category attributes are available.

  3. Choose product or variant

If a fact changes with a purchasable option, keep it with the variant. If it is shared, keep it with the product.

  4. Choose an appropriate field type

Use Shopify’s typed fields where available; do not put a measurement in an unlabelled sentence.

  5. Check the storefront

Preview a real variant. Confirm the shopper sees the value and that the selected option does not show another variant’s information.

What this fixes—and what it does not

Good attributes make a product easier to understand and organize. They can support filters, reporting, and channel requirements when Shopify and the channel support that data. They do not guarantee a search ranking, an AI recommendation, or a theme display.
