Four fields with four jobs
Shopify product records can hold a category, a product type, collections, and tags. They overlap just enough to cause messy catalogs. Start by giving each one a job.
| Field | What it answers | Example for an insulated steel bottle |
|---|---|---|
| Product category | What standardized kind of thing is this? | Water Bottles |
| Product type | What short, merchant-readable label do we use for this item? | Insulated water bottle |
| Collection | Where should shoppers browse this product in this store? | Back to school; Hydration |
| Tags | Which flexible facts or workflow labels help us filter and organize? | steel, 750-ml, navy, giftable |
The category comes from Shopify's Standard Product Taxonomy. Shopify exposes it as a hierarchy with an ID, a name, and a full path. It is a shared classification, so choose the closest supported product kind. Do not use a collection name or a marketing phrase in its place.
Use the product, not the headline
Read the record before you search the taxonomy. Identify the thing the buyer receives. Then separate its base product from its material, intended user, bundle contents, or selling angle.
State the physical or digital item plainly
“A reusable bottle,” “a dog collar,” and “a travel mug” are useful starting points. “The everyday essential” is not.
Search the standard taxonomy for that item
Prefer a current, non-archived category with no more-specific subcategories beneath it. Read the full path before choosing it. A word match alone can put a bottle in first aid or sports equipment.
Check the facts that make a close match wrong
Ask what the item is for, who uses it, and whether it has a defining construction. If the record cannot answer that question, leave the category for review instead of inventing the answer.
Keep the rest of the meaning in the right fields
Use product type for a useful store label, collections for browsing, and tags for flexible filters. Do not create a new category just to retain a color, size, campaign, or season.
Five worked mappings
These are invented product examples, not merchant records. The category IDs and paths below were checked against Shopify's product-taxonomy repository and its 2026-08 English release on 12 October 2026. They show the level of evidence to keep with a real decision.
| Illustrative product | Verified standard category | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| 750 ml insulated steel bottle for everyday drinks | hg-11-3-11Home & Garden > Kitchen & Dining > Food & Beverage Carriers > Water Bottles | Use this when it is a general bottle. Do not choose Sports Water Bottles unless the record supports that use. |
| Adjustable leather collar for a pet dog | ap-2-17-8Animals & Pet Supplies > Pet Supplies > Pet Collars & Harnesses > Standard Collars | Leather is a material, not the category. “Dog” needs to be supported by the product record. |
| Women’s trail-running shoe | aa-8-1Apparel & Accessories > Shoes > Athletic Shoes | The current public taxonomy has Athletic Shoes. Keep “trail-running” and “women’s” in supported product data and store navigation where appropriate. |
| Ceramic coffee mug with a handle | hg-11-10-5-5Home & Garden > Kitchen & Dining > Tableware > Drinkware > Mugs | Choose Mugs when the item is a tableware mug. A lidded commuter vessel may instead be a Travel Mug. |
| Non-slip yoga mat | sg-2-26-3Sporting Goods > Fitness & General Exercise Equipment > Yoga & Pilates > Yoga & Pilates Mats | “Non-slip” is a claim to verify, not a reason to select a different category. |
When not to guess
Ambiguity is a product-data problem, not a copy problem. A bottle sold for cyclists could fit a general bottle or a sports bottle. A mug with a leak-resistant lid could be a mug or a travel mug. A collar that emits light could be a standard collar or an LED collar.
Record the missing fact: intended use, closure, power source, or defining feature. Ask the supplier or product owner. Until you have the answer, keep the current category or mark the proposed change for review. A precise-looking category based on an unproven detail creates a clean-looking mistake.
Download the review sheetGet the Shopify category decision worksheet (CSV). Use it to record the product fact, the taxonomy path, the taxonomy ID, and the fact that resolved an ambiguous choice.
Use Cuebase as the review step
In Cuebase, open Catalog Readiness and select a scanned product. The rule breakdown shows whether a standard product category and product type are present. Choose Generate improvements to prepare suggestions for review.
Review every suggested value against the product facts: the category path, product type, copy, and any attributes. Cuebase uses category choices returned by Shopify rather than asking you to enter a taxonomy ID. If a suggestion lacks support, choose Discard, correct or add the product fact, and generate a new set. When every suggestion is right, choose Apply all to Shopify. Cuebase sends those changes to Shopify only after you apply them.
A category will not repair a thin record by itself. Pair this review with a factual description and the fields shoppers need. See how to choose the first 10 products to improve when you need a practical starting list.
A five-minute final check
- Can you point to a fact that says what the product is?
- Does the full taxonomy path describe that thing, rather than a material or campaign?
- Is the chosen node current and specific without relying on a guess?
- Are product type, collections, and tags doing their separate jobs?
- Has a person reviewed the suggestion before it reaches Shopify?
That is enough to make the category useful. The goal is not the most elaborate label. It is a category you can explain and defend from the product record. Read the product-data guide, then start your free catalog scan.
