How to Explain Product Materials Without Vague Claims

Replace material adjectives with composition, construction, care, and evidence you can name on a Shopify product page.

Name the material before the benefit

A material description should let a reader identify the thing, not guess at the feeling you want to sell. “Shell: 100% nylon; lining: 100% polyester” is a fact when it comes from a current specification. “Built for every adventure” is a selling line. It can follow the facts, but it cannot replace them.

Shopify recommends product descriptions include specifications such as size, material, and weight. Its writing guidance also calls out materials, functions, care instructions, and fit details as useful product-page information. Use that as a prompt to collect the facts, not as permission to fill gaps with likely-sounding copy.

Use four separate fields in your working record

Field What belongs there What does not
Composition Fiber, metal, wood, or other material and percentage when the source gives it. “Sustainable blend” with no composition.
Construction or finish A documented treatment, weave, coating, or hardware finish. “Luxury finish” with no defined construction.
Care The exact supplied care instruction or a verified product label. A care rule copied from a different material.
Certification or claim Named program, scope, identifier, source, and date if you have them. “Certified,” “organic,” or “recycled” without evidence.

Keep the source next to the claim. A supplier specification can support composition. A test report may support a defined performance claim. A certification document may support only the scope it names. If you cannot identify the source, mark the field unknown and leave the claim out of public copy.

Turn one vague sentence into checkable information

Here is a fictional exercise. It is not a supplier statement, product listing, or claim about a real material.

Vague copy What to ask for Safer copy after evidence
“A soft, planet-friendly throw.” Fiber composition, source document, care label, and the exact basis for any environmental claim. Fictional source record: main textile 100% cotton; machine wash cold; no environmental claim. Fictional customer copy: “Fictional Coast Throw is made from 100% cotton. Machine wash cold.”
“Made with recycled materials.” Which component, percentage, certification or supplier declaration, scope, and date. State only the documented component and percentage; omit the claim if those are unknown.
“Durable brushed metal.” Base metal, finish, test or use condition if durability is claimed, and care instruction. Name the verified metal and finish. Leave “durable” out unless you can support what it means.

The point is not to make every description longer. It is to remove the part that asks the customer to trust an undefined word. If your record says “100% cotton, machine wash cold,” say that. If it does not say whether a coating is water-resistant, do not imply it is.

Put material facts where your store can reuse them

After you choose the right product category, Shopify may offer category metafields, called product attributes in the taxonomy. Shopify says these fields map to the standard taxonomy and can make products more discoverable on a store, marketplaces, and search engines. They can also connect to product variant options where appropriate.

Use the product description for the explanation a shopper reads. Use a consistent material field when the same fact should be available across comparable products. Do not treat a metafield as automatic proof that the storefront displays it; check the product template and live page. For a variable material, record which sellable variant the fact applies to rather than putting one blanket claim on the parent product.

Download the evidence sheet

Get the material description evidence record (CSV). It keeps the public wording tied to a source, scope, review date, and open question.

Review a full Cuebase suggestion set before writing anything

In Cuebase, open Catalog Readiness and select a scanned product. Choose Generate improvements. Cuebase prepares pending suggestions for the description, SEO fields, product type, a category candidate when Shopify returns one, and proposed custom attributes.

Review the complete set against the material evidence record. This matters because a polished description can still contain an unsupported material or certification claim. Review the displayed suggestions as one set. If any suggestion lacks support, choose Discard, add or correct the product fact, and generate a new set. When every displayed suggestion is accurate, choose Apply all to Shopify. Cuebase sends the reviewed set only after that action.

What to do with sustainability language

Do not use “eco-friendly,” “responsible,” “clean,” or “conscious” as substitutes for a documented fact. They can cover very different claims: composition, sourcing, a certification, packaging, durability, or a supplier policy. A customer cannot tell which one you mean, and neither can a later reviewer.

If a source supports a narrow claim, keep it narrow. If a recycled-content percentage applies to a lining but not the whole product, say so. If a certification’s scope or date is missing, do not present it as a current product certification. This is a data-quality rule, not a marketing limitation.

Final material check

  1. Read the source

Confirm the material, percentage, component, and date. Flag anything that is missing.

  2. Match it to the variant

Make sure the fact applies to every option named on the page. If it does not, name the variant or split the record.

  3. Check the live page

Confirm composition, care, and qualified claims display in the intended place and still match the source.
