How to Write Product Titles That Identify the Right Item

Write Shopify product titles that identify the product without turning every title into a keyword list.

Start in Cuebase, then edit the product title in Shopify

Open Catalog Readiness and select a scanned product. The rule breakdown flags a title that is missing or short, alongside category, product type, and attribute gaps. Use it to choose the record to inspect. It does not prove which words belong in the title.

Cuebase does not generate or apply the Shopify product title. Review the product record, edit the customer-facing title in Shopify admin, and run a new scan. Generate improvements is for product-level drafts such as description, SEO fields, product type, category suggestion, and custom attributes; a generated SEO title is not a renamed product.

Give the title one job

On a Shopify product page, the title is the customer-facing name of the product. It should distinguish the item from nearby products. Shopify keeps it separate from the search-engine listing title, product type, category, and variant options.

Shopify’s product-details reference describes those as separate areas of the product record. Start with the product noun. Add only facts that separate this item from another: a meaningful material, an identity-defining size, a form factor, or a supported use. Leave color, pack count, and selectable sizes to variants.

Use in the titleUsually keep elsewhereReason
Product kind: “insulated water bottle”Shipping or return policyThe title names the thing, not the transaction.
Meaningful material: “linen duvet cover”Unsupported comfort or environmental claimsOnly a verified material belongs in the identity.
Form: “wall-mounted spice rack”Long feature listPut installation and capacity details in the description or attributes.
A fixed set size: “6-piece pour-over set”Selectable color or sizeUse variant options when the shopper chooses the value.

Use a small, factual formula

For many products, this sequence works: brand (if needed) + product kind + differentiating fact. It is a check, not a template. “Northfield Ceramic Mug” can already be clear. “Northfield Handmade Ceramic Mug, Coffee Cup, Gift, Kitchen, Home, Best Seller” is a list.

Before changing a title, read the record that supports each word. A supplier’s material, capacity, included parts, and category are useful evidence. A marketing brief may guide phrasing, but it does not prove a claim. Remove unsupported words.

Six fictional rewrites

These invented examples show title decisions. Their source column contains fictional records, not real product claims or category recommendations.

The Everyday OneFictional brand — 750 ml Insulated Water BottleSpec: insulated bottle; 750 ml.Names the item and fixed capacity; color remains an option.
Cloud SetFictional brand — Linen Duvet Cover SetSupplier record: linen duvet-cover set.“Linen” is useful because the fictional record confirms it.
Coffee KitFictional brand — 6-Piece Pour-Over Coffee SetBill of materials: six pour-over pieces.Names the method and the fixed contents count.
The TrailFictional brand — Trail Running ShoeBrief: athletic shoe for trail running.Names the product and intended use without adding unproven support claims.

Mini ToteFictional brand — Canvas Crossbody Tote BagSupplier record: canvas tote; crossbody strap.Names material and carrying form; dimensions belong in product data.

Do not confuse the product title with the SEO title

Shopify’s product details page has a product title and a separate search-engine listing section. Cuebase can generate a suggested SEO title, along with a description, SEO description, product type, category suggestion, and custom attributes. That SEO-title draft does not rename the Shopify product. Review it as a search-listing field, not as permission to change the product’s customer-facing name.

Cuebase’s Catalog Readiness rule checks whether a product title is present and descriptive. At present, Cuebase does not generate or apply changes to the Shopify product title itself. If the title needs work, edit it in Shopify admin after reviewing the record, then run a new Catalog Readiness scan. That keeps the app’s score honest: it can flag a short title, but the merchant owns the final product-name change.

A practical Cuebase review loop

  1. Open the product in Catalog Readiness

Use the rule breakdown to see whether the title is flagged as short or missing and to find related gaps such as category, product type, or structured attributes.

  2. Write the candidate title outside the generated draft

Use only facts in the product record. Do not copy the SEO-title suggestion into the product-title field without checking its purpose and evidence.

  3. Edit the product title in Shopify

Save the merchant-reviewed title in the product details page. Then make sure options still carry buyer choices such as color, size, or pack count.

  4. Rescan in Cuebase

Confirm the title rule and the surrounding fields now describe the same item. Review generated copy separately, and apply it only when it is factual.

Download the title review sheet

Get the Shopify product-title review sheet (CSV). It records every title word, its product-record source, and whether it belongs in a variant instead.

A title should survive this test

  • Could a new staff member identify the item from the title?
  • Does each descriptive word have a source in the product record?
  • Are selectable choices in option values instead of a pile of titles?
  • Is the product title distinct from the SEO title and description?
  • Did you inspect the storefront after changing the title?

The best title is not the longest one. It is the shortest accurate name that distinguishes the product a customer can actually buy. Continue with the Shopify product-data guide, choose the first 10 products to improve, and check common catalog gaps. Then start your free catalog scan.
