Agentic commerce

Shopify agentic commerce: what's already on, and what you control

Your catalog is probably already reaching AI shopping surfaces without you doing anything. Here is what is actually switched on, what you can and cannot turn off, and why the work that remains is not what most articles say it is.

On accuracy

A lot of writing on this topic repeats a specific error, explained below. Everything here was checked against Shopify's own documentation on 4 August 2026. Where something could not be confirmed at the source — including exact launch dates and regional eligibility — this guide leaves it out rather than guessing.

It is already on

Shopify's documentation states that agentic storefronts are active by default for eligible stores. There is no switch to find, no integration to build, and no feed to submit. The single action required of a merchant is accepting the supplemental terms of service.

Shopify says this in its own words: eligible products are "automatically discoverable by AI channels through Shopify Catalog" (Shopify Help Center, Shopify Catalog and product discovery for agentic storefronts). The merchant-facing agentic storefronts overview is the companion page, and between them they are the two documents to read before you take anyone's word for how this works — including ours.

This is the part most merchants get wrong in both directions. Some assume they need to do setup work to appear in AI shopping and go looking for a configuration page that does not exist. Others assume nothing has happened yet and that this is all still a future problem. Neither is right: the distribution is live, and it happened without you.

What you can and cannot turn off

Control here is narrower than people expect:

  • You cannot opt out of Shopify Catalog itself. There is no global off switch for catalog inclusion.
  • You can block individual channels. If you do not want a specific surface carrying your products, that is the lever available to you.
  • Changes are not instant. Blocking a channel can take up to seven days to propagate, so this is not a same-day control.

What you do control is the record itself. Shopify documents that products are syndicated with "title, description, options, images, price, availability, and other key attributes", and the same page covers the storefront templates agents.md.liquid, llms.txt.liquid and llms-full.txt.liquid, plus Shopify Catalog Mapping for exposing metafields and metaobjects (Shopify Help Center). Read that list as the actual scope of your influence: not whether you are in, but what the entry says about you once you are.

One terminology note that will save you confusion when reading Shopify's material: Shopify Catalog is the merchant-facing name. "Global Catalog" is developer and API terminology for the same underlying thing. If a blog post uses them as if they were two separate products, that is a sign the author is guessing.

Checkout works differently by surface

This is the detail with the most practical consequence, and it is routinely glossed over. Not every AI surface completes the purchase the same way.

Surface How the purchase completes What that means for you
ChatGPT Redirects the shopper to your own checkout You get a session and an order you can attribute normally
Google Direct checkout supported An order can exist with little or no storefront session behind it
Microsoft Copilot Direct checkout supported Same — the purchase may not look like normal referral traffic
Meta Direct checkout supported Same

The consequence is an attribution one. When a purchase completes inside another company's surface, there may be no page view on your storefront to tie it to. That is one of several reasons measured AI referral traffic understates real AI influence — covered in more detail in tracking AI referral traffic.

What the assistant actually receives

The receiving side publishes its own requirements, and they are worth reading next to Shopify's. OpenAI's commerce specifications document the structured catalog data behind discovery and checkout in ChatGPT, including pricing, availability and seller context (OpenAI, product feeds). Nothing there rewards atmosphere. It is a list of facts a machine expects to find, and your catalog either supplies them or it does not.

UCP is not ACP, and most articles get this wrong

If you read around this topic you will repeatedly see it claimed that Shopify's agentic checkout runs on the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP). That is incorrect.

  • ACP is maintained by OpenAI and Stripe. Shopify is not part of it.
  • UCP, the Universal Commerce Protocol, is the one Shopify co-developed with Google, announced 11 January 2026.

Two different protocols, from two different groups. It is an easy mistake to make because both emerged around the same time and both concern AI-driven purchasing, but repeating it in a pitch deck or a client report is the kind of error that costs credibility with anyone who actually works in this space.

Also worth knowing

Perplexity is frequently listed as a Shopify agentic channel. Treat that carefully: Perplexity's checkout path runs through a third-party payment flow, so those orders do not arrive in your Shopify admin the way a normal order does. Perplexity is still very much worth tracking for mentions — it just is not the same thing as a Shopify checkout channel.

If inclusion is automatic, what is the work?

This is the real strategic point. When distribution is handed to everyone equally, distribution stops being an advantage. Every eligible competitor in your category is in the same catalog you are.

What separates the products an assistant names from the ones it skips is whether the data can prove a match. A shopper asks for a waterproof hiking boot in a wide fit under a certain price. The assistant has to establish all three things. A product record with a vague title, no category, no width attribute and a description written as brand atmosphere cannot answer that. A record that states materials, widths, weight and price plainly can.

There is outside evidence that this is where the gap sits. Adobe Analytics data, reported by TechCrunch on 16 April 2026, found that around 34% of retailer product pages cannot be properly accessed by AI — a third of the shelf effectively invisible at the moment of comparison. The same analysis put the growth in context: AI traffic to US retail sites rose 393% in Q1 2026 against a year earlier, and in March 2026 that traffic converted 42% better than non-AI traffic. It draws on over 1 trillion visits to US retail sites plus a survey of 5,000+ US respondents (Adobe Analytics data, reported by TechCrunch, 16 April 2026). Rising, better-converting traffic against a third of pages that cannot be read properly is the whole argument for treating selection, not presence, as the work.

  1. Stop looking for the on switch

There isn't one, and time spent hunting for it is time not spent on the thing that actually decides outcomes.

  2. Audit what your product data can prove

Category, identifiers, brand, attributes, images with alt text, accurate price and availability. See the product data checklist for the field-by-field version.

  3. Fix the catalog consistently, not just your hero products

A half-filled catalog is unreliable to a retrieval system. Consistency across products matters as much as depth on any one.

  4. Measure mentions, not just clicks

Because some purchases complete off your site, visibility and traffic answer different questions. Read them together — see measuring AI share of voice.

What nobody can promise you

Being in the catalog does not entitle you to be recommended, and no tool or agency can guarantee an assistant will name your store. AI answers vary between runs — the same prompt can return different brands on different days. Anyone selling you a guaranteed placement in an AI answer is selling something they cannot deliver.

What you can do is make your products the easiest correct answer to the questions your buyers actually ask, and then track whether that is working over time rather than on any single day.

Common questions

Do I have to turn agentic storefronts on?

No. Shopify's documentation states that agentic storefronts are active by default for eligible stores. The one action required of a merchant is accepting the supplemental terms of service.

Can I opt out of Shopify Catalog entirely?

No. You cannot opt out of Shopify Catalog itself. You can block individual channels, and that change can take up to seven days to propagate.

Is the Agentic Commerce Protocol the same as Shopify's protocol?

No, and this is a common mistake. The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) is maintained by OpenAI and Stripe. Shopify co-developed the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) with Google, announced 11 January 2026. They are different protocols from different groups.

Does a shopper buy inside ChatGPT?

For Shopify merchants, ChatGPT redirects the shopper to your own checkout rather than completing the purchase in the conversation. Direct checkout applies to Google, Microsoft Copilot and Meta. This distinction matters for how the order shows up in your analytics.

If inclusion is automatic, what is actually left to do?

Being present is not the same as being chosen. Assistants pick the products whose data proves they match what the shopper asked for. The work is making product titles, descriptions, categories, identifiers and attributes specific and complete enough to win that comparison.
