In Cuebase, compare AI-referred traffic and Shopify order records using one date window, then use GA4 as a second measurement. Different totals are normal when the systems observe different events or lose different signals.

Start with the question, not the gap
“How much AI traffic did we get?” sounds like one question, but a Shopify report and a GA4 report may answer different versions of it. GA4 can report sessions it received with an assistant source and uses rule-based default channel groups. Shopify can show a session referral or order conversion summary when information is available. Cuebase records its own storefront pixel events and separately attributes orders from Shopify order records.
Those are useful views. They are not interchangeable. Before you compare a total, write a one-line definition for each number. For example: “GA4 sessions where Session source / medium was chatgpt.com / referral” is not the same as “Shopify orders that show chatgpt.com in a conversion summary.”
Run these four checks in order
Match the completed date window and time zone
Use a period that has finished in both systems, such as 1–28 October 2026. Record the Shopify time zone and GA4 property time zone. A midnight boundary can put the same visit or order on different dates. Do not compare “last 30 days” if each tool calculates it at a different moment.
Match the unit
Label each number as sessions, users, orders, revenue, or conversion rate. Do not compare GA4 users with Shopify sessions, or referral sessions with orders. If you calculate conversion, use the numerator and denominator from the same source and window.
Check how the source was captured
GA4 needs its tracking to run and receive source data. Shopify’s conversion summary may be limited or empty when cookies are blocked, the order comes from a draft or non-Online Store channel, or source data is unavailable. Cuebase classifies a visit from an explicit UTM source, a Google AI marker, or a matching referrer host; its order count is a separate attribution record.
Look for report warnings and store changes
Shopify flags known data disruptions on affected analytics cards and reports. Consent configuration, a new cookie banner, a storefront change, a redirect, an app, or a tracking update can also change what a tool observes. Write the change down before explaining a trend as shopper behavior.
A reconstruction, not a customer report
Illustrative onlyFor 1–28 October 2026, a fictional store records 18 GA4 sessions for chatgpt.com / referral. In Shopify, 11 orders have chatgpt.com as the available source or referrer in the order conversion summary; this is an order count, not a session count. Cuebase records 14 ChatGPT sessions for the same date window, and 1 order attributed to ChatGPT. These figures are a worked reconstruction, not a merchant account or a live demo.
The right conclusion is not that one tool “wins.” The three totals count different observations under different conditions. The useful next step is to preserve the definitions: GA4 source row, Shopify order-level detail, Cuebase source classification, date window, time zones, and consent state.
| Metric | Illustrative numerator | Illustrative denominator | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| GA4 observed ChatGPT share | 18 ChatGPT-referral sessions | 12,480 GA4 sessions | 18 ÷ 12,480 = 0.14% of sessions GA4 recorded with that referral. |
| Cuebase observed ChatGPT share | 14 ChatGPT sessions | 12,100 Cuebase sessions | 14 ÷ 12,100 = 0.12% within Cuebase’s pixel measurement. |
| Cuebase source conversion | 1 ChatGPT-attributed order | 14 ChatGPT sessions | 1 ÷ 14 = 7.1%; a small illustrative denominator, not a forecast. |
What Shopify can add
Open an order and review its Conversion summary. Shopify says that, when available, it can show visits in the last 30 days and the origin of the first visit. A limited summary can still show a source or referrer and landing page. It may take up to 48 hours for summary details to appear. That makes it helpful for checking individual orders, but it is not a reason to force a one-for-one match with a GA4 acquisition report.
Shopify’s explanation of analytics discrepancies covers differences in page reloads, unique visitors, sessions, bot traffic, privacy settings, cookies, JavaScript, and time zones. Its current session-measurement changes can alter session-based metrics without changing total orders, sales, or customers. If your gap begins at a known measurement change, establish a new baseline rather than comparing across the boundary as if nothing changed.
Use Cuebase as a third, labelled view
In Agent Channel Analytics, select the same range and compare the source rows. The screen shows AI sessions, AI orders, AI revenue, AI share of orders, a sessions-over-time chart, and traffic and revenue by source. Its conversion figure is orders divided by its counted sessions. Keep it labelled as Cuebase’s measurement rather than calling it GA4 or Shopify data.
That label matters because Cuebase’s own interface says attribution is best-effort: assistants can strip referrers. An empty or lower source row can mean a missing signal. It does not show that the assistant had no role in a shopper’s research.
Make the reconciliation repeatable
Use the CSV to compare one assistant and one date range at a time. Fill in the report name, unit, source rule, time zone, numerator, denominator, and tracking notes. If the two numbers differ, name the most likely measurement difference only after you checked the definitions. “Different tracking systems” is not an explanation unless you say what each tracked.

A sensible reporting sentence
For a regular report, write the source, window, and limit in one sentence: “From 1–28 October, GA4 recorded 18 sessions with chatgpt.com / referral; Cuebase recorded 14 ChatGPT sessions in its pixel data for the same window. The figures use different tracking systems and should be read as recorded referrals, not total AI influence.”
Use the parent guide to tracking AI traffic in Shopify, the shopping-question template, and the dated backpack study as currently live related resources. Then add Cuebase to Shopify.
